Roku’s talks with Apple on bringing AirPlay 2 support to its streaming media players have been nearly finalized. While there’s no final word yet from either of the companies, Roku media boxes should soon receive AirPlay 2 support.

As per MacRumors, the “negotiations are nearly finalized” between Roku and Apple. AirPlay 2 support on Roku media boxes will likely arrive as a software update for the boxes.

Apple and Roku are currently finalizing a launch date and working on the marketing surrounding AirPlay 2 support on Roku media boxes.

Apple has vastly expanded AirPlay 2 since the beginning of this year. At CES 2019, leading TV manufacturers announced that they are adding AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to their TVs. This included companies like Samsung, Sony, LG, and Vizio.

With AirPlay 2 support, iPhone and iPad owners will be able to wirelessly stream audio and video from their phone or tablet to their TV or Roku box connected to their TV.

Apple is introducing a number of AirPlay 2 related changes in iOS 12.2 including a new system icon. So it is likely that we will see Roku announce AirPlay 2 support coming to its media boxes around the time iOS 12.2 drops.

By expanding AirPlay 2 support to TVs and media boxes, Apple will be able to better take on Google Cast which has become an extremely popular way to stream content from one’s smartphone to their TV or other Google Cast-enabled devices. As the year goes on, we are possibly going to see Apple further expand AirPlay 2 support to more devices.
