AMD Celebrates 50th Anniversary With ‘Gold Edition’ Ryzen, Radeon VII

On Wednesday, May 1, AMD will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its own founding. While we lobbied the company to release life-sized cutouts of Jerry Sanders, AMD has opted to actually build products instead.

Unlike Intel’s 8086K “Anniversary Edition” from last year, however, the new Ryzen 7 2700X Gold Edition doesn’t have any clock jumps or changes. The only actual benefit of the chip over a standard model is the addition of Lisa Su’s signature on the package and a gold box, available at a $329 MSRP.  In addition, a new version of the Radeon VII comes with a red shroud and gold AMD50 packaging, but no signature is mentioned. The price and availability from AMD.com and JD.com are listed at $699.

But while AMD isn’t offering higher clocks or better performance with these parts, it is packing in its AMD50 game bundle. Here’s the company directly:

AMD50 Game Bundle: Gamers who purchase Gold Edition products — as well as other eligible AMD Ryzen processors, Radeon graphics cards, or Ryzen and Radeon-powered PCs… — will receive a coupon code for a free PC version of World War Z. They will also receive a coupon code for a free PC version of Tom Clancy’s The Division:registered: 2 Gold Edition, which includes a Year 1 Season Pass providing one-week early access to all Year 1 Episodes; eight classified assignments and assignment rewards (backpack trophies); instant unlock of three new specializations as they release; an agent ward outfit, scout emote, and additional bounties and projects; as well as an exclusive AMD50 in-game armband.

AMD50 Tribute T-Shirt and CEO Dr. Lisa Su-Autographed Sticker: To mark this milestone in the company’s history, Gold Edition AMD Ryzen and Radeon products will include an AMD50 sticker signed by the AMD CEO and a coupon to redeem for a free AMD 50th anniversary t-shirt.

There’s also going to be a select sale. Retailers will be offering various deals. Best Buy is mentioned as offering up to $150 off on “select AMD products,” available exclusively to Best Buy customers in the US. The language implies that deals from other retailers should also be available.

Eligible products for the AMD50 Game Bundle include the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Gold Edition, Ryzen 7 2700X, Ryzen 7 2700, Ryzen 5 2600X, Ryzen 5 2600, Ryzen 5 2400G, Radeon VII Gold Edition, Radeon VII, RX Vega series, RX 590, RX 580, and RX 570.

At this point, would-be AMD buyers might be better off waiting for the unveil of 7nm and Ryzen, but the 50th Anniversary also presents a bit of a unique collection opportunity if you’re a major fan.
